Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device

It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story movie was released, launching Pixar as a leading film company and bringing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a brief look into the plot but keeping viewers curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys

In the teaser shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The final act Woody did before setting off for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
