A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
